Best Beginner Bass Guitar in Malaysia

Best Beginner Bass Guitar in Malaysia

Written by Fariz, Guitar Specialist at Guitarlicious

Bass gets treated as an afterthought a lot of the time — "just the low notes" — but a properly set-up beginner bass genuinely changes how fast you pick up the instrument. Here's what we actually recommend to first-time bass players walking into the shop.

What Actually Matters for a First Bass

Neck width and scale length. Bass necks are wider than guitar necks, and full-scale (34") basses can feel like a stretch for smaller hands or younger players. Short-scale basses (around 30") are genuinely worth considering if this is a concern.

Pickup configuration. Jazz-style (single-coil pairs) basses tend to have a brighter, more versatile tone; Precision-style (split single-coil) basses have a punchier, more focused low-end. Neither is "better" — it depends on the sound you're chasing.

Weight. Bass bodies are often heavier than guitar bodies. If you're buying for a smaller or younger player, this is worth checking in person rather than assuming from spec sheets alone.

RCStromm DELTA-4 (KB03) — RM419, In Stock

DELTA-4 Series 4 String Bass Guitar ( RCStromm Gamma / KB03 )

This is the cheapest genuinely solid option we carry, and it's confirmed in stock right now. A basswood body with a deep beveled cutaway for full fretboard access, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, 24 jumbo frets, and a precision-style pickup with dual volume and tone controls. Available in six colors (Gradient White, Silver, Natural, Black, Sunburst, Red), with Blue currently on order.

Best for: the tightest possible budget for a first bass that still feels like a real instrument, not a toy.

SQOE Jazz 4-String Bass (JB4BS-300) — RM629, In Stock

JB4BS-300 ALL

A step up from the DELTA-4, and still genuinely affordable. A Jazz-style basswood body, maple neck and fretboard, SQOE's own passive pickup, and standard .045–.100 gauge roundwound strings — everything a beginner actually needs, nothing you're paying extra for that you won't use yet. Available in Sunburst, Blue, Natural, and Mint Green, with a few additional colors currently on order.

Best for: first-time bass players who want a slightly more refined instrument than the absolute entry level, without jumping into three-figure-plus territory.

"A lot of beginners assume they need a 5-string bass to sound 'serious' — I always steer first-timers back to a standard 4-string. You'll spend the first year mastering the fundamentals on four strings anyway, and a 5-string just adds width and complexity you don't need yet."

If You Want Short-Scale for Smaller Hands

If a full 34" scale feels like a stretch — common for younger players or anyone with smaller hands — our short-scale bass collection includes options from Sqoe and Squier, with the Squier short-scale option sitting around RM909. Shorter scale length means less distance between frets, which can make early chord and note transitions noticeably more comfortable.

Even Tighter Budget: Gamma

If RM419 still isn't quite where your budget needs to sit, Gamma's entry-level basses start from around RM249. These won't match the DELTA-4 or SQOE on hardware refinement, but they're a legitimate way to start without a big upfront commitment — useful if you're buying for a child who might not stick with it, or just testing the waters yourself.

Best for: absolute tightest budget, or buying for a child who might not stick with it.

Stepping Up: Ibanez

Once you've been playing consistently and know you're sticking with bass, Ibanez's SoundGear-style basses are a natural upgrade path — better hardware, more refined electronics, and the brand recognition that makes resale easier down the line if you ever want to trade up further.

Best for: players who've outgrown a true entry-level bass and want a noticeable step up in build quality and tone.

Don't Forget the Amp

A bass guitar plugged into a regular guitar amp will sound thin and weak — bass amps are built differently to handle low-frequency output properly. If you're starting from scratch, budget for a small bass practice amp alongside the bass itself; we can help put together a starter bundle that covers both.
