Almost every first-time buyer at the counter asks some version of this right after picking their guitar: "Okay, what else do I actually need?" Some walk in expecting to spend another few hundred ringgit on gear they don't need yet.
Others walk out with just the guitar and text us a week later asking why it won't stay in tune. Neither extreme is right — here's the actual list, split into what you need on day one and what can wait.
Non-Negotiable — Get These Same Day
1. A tuner. This is the one item that isn't optional. An out-of-tune guitar sounds wrong even when you're playing correctly, and that alone convinces a lot of beginners they're "bad at this" in week one. A basic clip-on chromatic tuner from our tuner collection does the job — you don't need anything fancy to start.
2. Picks (a few, not just one). Picks get dropped, lost under sofas, and worn down faster than people expect. Grab a mixed pack of thin and medium gauges so you can figure out what feels right in your hand — this isn't a one-size-fits-all item.
3. A gig bag or case. Even a basic padded bag from our bags collection matters more in Malaysia than people assume — humidity and sudden downpours are not kind to an uncased guitar sitting in a car boot or against a wall.
4. A strap — if you're going electric, or plan to practice standing. Acoustic players who only ever sit down can skip this initially, but electric players will want one from day one since standing practice is common even at home.
Worth Getting Within the First Month
1. A capo. Not essential on day one, but the moment you start learning songs from YouTube or a songbook, you'll hit chord shapes that need one. A basic capo from our capo collection is inexpensive enough to just add to the first purchase if you're already at the counter.
2. A spare set of strings. Strings snap — usually at the most inconvenient time, mid-practice, the night before you finally had momentum going. Keep one spare set in the case so a broken string doesn't turn into a week-long delay waiting for a shop trip.
3. A small cleaning cloth. Sweat and finger oils build up on strings and the fretboard faster in Malaysia's climate than in drier countries. A microfibre cloth after each session keeps strings sounding brighter for longer and isn't something most beginners think about until strings start sounding dull within weeks.
What You Don't Need Yet
1. Effects pedals. We get customers eyeing the pedal accessories wall in week one, and we usually talk them out of it. Learn the instrument first — pedals shape a tone you don't have the ear for yet, and it's money better spent later once you know what sound you're actually chasing.
2. A second guitar "just in case." Common instinct, unnecessary expense. One well-set-up guitar is plenty until you've been playing consistently for months and know what you're missing.
3. Premium accessories across the board. A RM15 capo and a RM150 capo do the same job for a beginner. Save the upgrades for once you know your playing style well enough to actually notice the difference.

Everything else on this list can be added over your first month as you figure out what your actual playing habits look like — there's no point buying for a player you're not yet.
